Emotional Triggers

Blog post: on finding the positive emotional triggers to offset the negative...

Being a self employed business owner there was not a set time for my ex-husband to come home from work each day. So, hours before I thought he may come in I would make sure everything was perfect. The dishes were done. Dinner was almost ready. Everything was the way he liked it. When we heard the sound of a diesel engine we knew it was him, and he was coming down the street. The kids and I would run around the house for one last look when we heard him coming to make sure that nothing was out of place, and we were ready for him to come in the door.  It was a frantic few minutes for sure. To this day, hearing a diesel engine makes me physically sick and this has always been my biggest emotional trigger!!

The next emotional trigger would be ringtones. I was not allowed to do anything without my cell phone. I had to answer the phone right away, or I would PAY FOR IT LATER!! There are several ring tones that I have had over the last several years, which of course I don't have now, but other people use them. When I hear a phone ringing with one of those tones I literally have a physical reaction - you know that moment, when your adrenaline is released and it runs throughout your body from fear??? That is my first reaction, then I become nauseous because I am afraid I am going to be in trouble and my legs and arms become weak. I have to steady myself for what is about to happen, which of course doesn't happen now that I am out of the abusive marriage, but my body still reacts as though I am....

The rest are not as big but I would like to share them with you.
  • Wild onions in the spring. The smell of onions growing in the grass in the spring because this is the beginning of a long horrific mowing season.
  • Camp sign. There is a sign in my local town and I was looking at the sign when my ex-husband told me I could not longer go to college since "I wasn't worth the risk". I knew that day that if I didn't work somewhere else our marriage wasn't going to make it.
  • Traffic light. The traffic light where I threw up while driving to the next mowing job. I was eating so fast because we couldn't take lunch breaks. If we took a lunch break we weren't making money. If we weren't making money we were useless. So, I only had a few minutes and I was trying to eat a sandwich before I got to the next yard. I ate to quickly, choked, and threw-up.
  • Wet grass. Oh my. If there was wet grass we would all PAY FOR IT! Jobs would take longer to complete and that was a huge NO NO!
  • The Weather Channel. The Weather Channel was always on if I was home. I was required to watch the "Local on the 8's" every 10 minutes, because if he called to ask about any potential rain I needed to know where the rain was, how much longer he had before he got wet etc.
  • Holidays. He hated holidays. It meant we had to spend money, which none of us deserved but him, and he did not like to be around any people so he was always anxious to leave. Holidays were extremely stressful.
  • Birthdays. He hated birthdays too. This was a persons special day and no one should have a special day but him. I was never wished "Happy Birthday" and there were never any birthday gifts.
  • Dinner. He controlled everything I cooked. He was always angry about supper. I could never cook it just right. Of course he could cook. In fact, he cooked very well if you asked him! Every day there was a huge stress about how bad supper was going to turn out!
  • Home telephone ringing. We weren't allowed to answer the phone. He didn't want to talk to anyone so we couldn't answer. Whenever the phone rang there was tension in the air. If I talked to someone on the phone when I would hang up he would list the things I said wrong during my conversation. Eventually, I wouldn't talk on the phone when he was around to keep from hearing how I couldn't even have a conversation RIGHT!
  • Mailman. In the last few years of our marriage I was not allowed to get the mail. He thought I was stealing money from our business. Think about it...it's OUR business, so how could I be stealing from it??? Of course I wasn't, but his mind was so twisted and so controlling I couldn't touch the mail until he went through it.
You know, as I sit here and type out this list it makes me sick. These triggers are not small. They are huge. My life was so horrible then, I don't know how I made it out alive! But I did! That's why I want to share my story with you. No one knew what went on in our house. Sure, people had a clue things we off, but no one had any idea how bad things were.

I want to be there for other women who are in unhealthy relationships. I so desperately wanted someone to hear me; someone to believe me. Now I can hear!! And I believe!!

You're too sensitive!, You're misunderstanding the situatioin!, You're reading too much into it!

You're too sensitive!
You're misunderstanding the situation!
You're reading too much into it!

I lived by these words for so many years....

Confusion is one of the tactics abusers use. The more confused you are the more they are in control. Many times I felt as though I was living in the twilight zone!!

I can't tell you how many times every word I said was twisted, or every opinion I had was wrong. Well, that's not true because every time I spoke I was wrong. This is such a silly story, truly, yet it was another turning point in my realization that I needed to get out of my marriage...

We had a half bath in our last house and my ex-husband insisted on keeping a bar of soap to wash his hands with in there. The surface of the counter was tile, so as you can imagine, if you set a wet bar of soap on the counter it would be ONE HOT MESS TO CLEAN UP! I had politely asked for months if we could use something else in there since this was the guest bathroom and the counters were looking pretty rough. His reply was for me to clean them more. So, one day was watching an episode of Dr. Oz and on this particular episode Dr. Oz said that the best way to clean your hands was with foaming hand soap. I explained this to my ex-husband and he finally gave me the ok (which is ridiculous that I had to get the ok!!!) to buy a bottle of the foaming hand soap to put on the counter. End of story right??? WRONG!!!

Fast forward a week or so later; I was at a craft store called JoAnn's. I was right in the middle of the store two isles back from the front door when my phone rang...

My ex says "I am so glad you finally got the foaming hand soap for the bathroom. I don't know why you have been using the bar soap, foaming hand soap cleans your hands much better. Everyone knows that!" I was literally standing in the isle thinking to myself "He is crazy! I just told him that a week ago, yet he has to pretend like it was his idea! WOW!" So I say to him "I just told you this last week" and his reply - "No you didn't you are misunderstanding the situation".

There were fall decorations on the shelf that day. I can see it as if I were standing there now. The topic was of no concern what so ever. The problem is - It was my idea, not his! Nothing I ever said was right. Nothing I ever did was right. Every single day he made it his to goal to prove how I was a complete failure at every single decision, every single thought, and every single action.

I heard these phrases every single day for years and years...

  • You are too sensitive.
  • You are misunderstanding the situation.
  • You are reading too much into it.

There are thousands of other stories just like this that happened every single day. Some of them have no meaning at all, except that he needed to be in control of absolutely everything. Other times what happened was just devastating. As you can imagine, if something this trivial was made into an issue, how much worse would a real issue be?!

Confusion was the game and he won for 24 years.
He isn't winning anymore!!

Every day a bomb blew up!

We all feel like this sometimes
This was me! Every day a bomb would blow up, I may not know the time or the specific "BOMB", but I could count on it blowing and blowing BIG!

I was responsible for everything! I was made to fix everything! If I was not with my ex-husband my phone had to be by my side at all times. I couldn't even go to the bathroom without my phone because when he needed me for the next emergency I better be ready! You may think I am joking when I share with you the bombs that blew up every day, but I promise you I AM NOT!
  • If my ex was stopped by one of our customers during a job he would be furious and he would call me and say "Mr. Brooking tied me up for 7 minutes, so now I am behind and I need you to meet me at the next yard" (We owned a lawn business).
  • If he was stopped at too many traffic lights he would call me and say "I am behind! I got stuck at the traffic light for 3 minutes, so I need you to meet me at the next yard".
  • "I forgot my wallet, so now you need to meet me at the next yard". Then I would be working for the next several hours.
  • "The mower broke down. I need you to come here and get the trailer, drive back to the house and get the spare mower, bring me the mower, and then take the broken equipment to the repair shop". When he could have ran the broken equipment to the shop in 30 minutes it takes me two hours.
  • "The tire went flat, so now I need you to come and work for a few hours because we are behind".
  • It rained for 30 minutes, so now I need you to come and work because we are behind".
  • "The help isn't working fast enough, so I am going to need you to come and help for a few hours".
  • "I had to leave to go to the bathroom, so now we are behind and I need you to come out and help".

This is just a drop in the bucket of the reasons he would call and need me; spur of the moment, to do something. And when he would call, he would literally time me to make sure I got there quick enough. I would either get the look "You made it in time" or "Oh boy, you are going to pay for this!!!".

Every single day there was some tragedy that made him angry, and when he was angry about something, and I had to fix it. The weather. The equipment. The traffic lights. The customers. The employees. He was tired. He was hot. Something every single day! As I look back on it now I can see it wasn't the events themselves that I needed to fix, it was that he needed to control my every move.

CONTROL! * CONTROL!  *CONTROL!

Soul Murder

This was me after 24 years of marriage.

I realize we all have different experiences and different life events that shape us. That is why we are who we are and why we do what we do today. This is but a glimpse into the 24 year experience with my abusive ex-husband.

In my case the control started so very small. He would say things like:
  • Don't wear that it's not flattering on you.
  • If you wear jewelry that isn't gold (and we couldn't afford gold) it makes you look cheap.
  • Don't go to the doctor because it costs too much money.
  • WE can't afford for you to get your haircut (of course he got his hair cut).
  • You shouldn't have said that! Didn't you see how she looked at you like you were stupid?
  • You can't buy clothes because we don't have the money (yet we netted $100,000 per year).
  • You can't go to college anymore. You are not worth the risk.
  • Your parenting our children wrong. They are hurting because YOU have hurt them.
And the list can go on and on and on....

I felt as though I had been rolled over by a steam roller. After he was done with all of his rules and regulations there wasn't much, if any, of ME left! He controlled everything I did. Everywhere I went. Everything I ate. Everything I wore. Every aspect of my life. EVERYTHING! When I filed for a divorce I was but a shell of a person. There wasn't an ounce of ME left. I was afraid to talk to people. I wouldn't look at anyone. I just knew everyone was appalled by my appearance and stupidity, and just in awe that I would even be seen in public because I was so hideous. And the sad thing is... I didn't see it. I believed him. He was my husband. He was my life partner. There is no way someone who loves you (actually he never did) can do that to you.

When I attended the University of Phoenix for a year in 2008-2009 I was sure I would be laughed out of the school because I was so stupid. In actuality, many of my professors commented on how refreshing it is to have a student who is so diligent and does such excellent work! I left the University of Phoenix, after not being allowed to continue my education, with a 3.87 GPA. I completed my associates degree in accounting in June and I will graduate with Magna Cum Laude honors as well as the Presidents Cup honors in a few weeks. My GPA is still a 3.87 and I will complete my bachelors degree in accounting December 2014!

As I heal from the control and the abuse I have come to realize a few things. I am intelligent! I am not hideously ugly! I am an excellent parent! I can speak correctly! I can cook, and I am actually very good at it! I am ME, and I am good enough!!!!

You see...that's it! That's the problem. These guys who like to control people, who need to abuse people have the problem! Not us! My ex-husband hates who he is and feels so horrible about himself that in order for him to live in this world he has to make others feel worse than he does.  He is narcissistic. He is a master manipulator. He is an abuser.  HE is the one with the problem not me!

1st Life Changing Moment

It was the summer of 2009. My mom, my daughter and I were in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. We were staying in a chalet on the mountain and as we were walking to the house my mom and I were talking....

These were her words -

"You're just like an abused woman and you don't even know it."

As she spoke I am almost rolling my eyes as this is not a true statement. Over the next several months her words weighed on my mind! Could I be? Is she right? No way! Not me! But she was right. I was! That was me!

I realize this is a difficult topic. It is a topic we don't want to talk about. A topic we don't want to belive. But it is real. It happens everyday. It happened, unknowingly, to me. Can it be happening to you or someone you know? Are you in a relationship that has unhealthy boundaries? For example these were my unhealthy boundaries:

  • I was only allowed to cook certain meals
  • I was not allowed to make plans
  • I was not allowed to listen to the radio
  • I was not allowed to turn the volume up on the tv
  • I was not allowed to use the remote for the tv
  • I was not allowed to walk around the house or use the bathroom if my husband was sleeping
  • I could not have a conversation with another person without being told all the things I said wrong
  • I could not drive a car withoug being told how I am a terrible driver
  • I could not grocery shop the way he wanted me to
  • I could not clean the house properly
  • I could not parent correctly
  • I would have to carry my phone everywhere, even the bathroom, because I could not miss his call
  • If I was home I had to watch the "local on the 8's" every ten minutes so I could give him an update of the current weather radar
  • If I was not with my husband he timed me on everything - how long it took me to run an errand for him, how long I was at the store, etc
  • There was NOTHING I could do right! I couldn't even go to the bathroom right!

Does any of this sound familiar? Is this you? Is this someone you know? When my mom first said those words to me, I didn't believe her, but then it was like the blinders slowly came off! I slowly began to see that the rules I had to live by were absurd!

So now where to we go? We have to help each other! We have to recognize these unhealthy boundaries and talk about them. That is why I wanted to start this blog. I desperately needed someone to hear me, someone to believe me. I hear you! I believe you!

Let's be this for each other. "Knowledge is power!" The more we talk about this the more we will realize how wrong it is, how unhealthy it is. I have been free for almost two years now, and I am finding my way to health and happiness. It has been a long hard journey, but I would not go back to the person I was before or the life I lived before.

2nd Life Changing Moment!

I found this book in 2011. It was a life changing moment for me. The author Lundy Bancroft knew my life and what I was going through so well, I felt as if he was hiding behind a curtain in my living room listening and watching us in person!
